A houseplant that comes in many sizes, species and colours: Ficus. Ficus originally grows in nature in Asia and Africa, but also in South America and Australia.
The Rubber Tree (Ficus Elastica) is one of the best known species of the Ficus family. Just like the Ficus Lyrata which we also call the violet leaf plant.
Taking care of the Ficus
A Ficus likes a lot of light. Although direct sunlight is usually not such a success. If the plant receives at least 5 hours of indirect sunlight, it is also satisfied.
It is best to water Ficus once a week in the summer. In winter, the houseplant is sufficient once every 1.5 to 2 weeks. As long as it doesn’t dry out too quickly.
Propagating the Ficus
Just like the Monstera, Ficus cuttings are very simple. You cut or trim a part of the branch with 2 or 3 leaves, and put it in a vase with water. It could hardly be easier! After a few weeks you will see that the roots have grown considerably.
As soon as the roots are about 25 centimetres, you can repot the cuttings. Pay attention! Make sure that the flowerpot is big enough to grow in. Fill this pot with fresh potting soil so that the cutting can get enough energy from the soil. Good luck!
