How-To paint laminate furniture

By Danique
in Home & Interior

It is possible that there is wooden furniture in your house, which in reality consists of paper layers with a wood pattern. In other words, laminate.

Just like other furniture, laminate can be painted. Although laminate takes a little more time than ordinary wooden furniture.

Supplies

  • Primer (oil base)
  • Acryllatex
  • Paint brush
  • Paint roller
  • Sandpaper (120 grit paper)
  • Sandpaper (220 grit paper)
  • Degreaser
  • Damp cloth

Step-by-step plan for painting laminate coated furniture

Step 1

Start by sanding the piece of furniture. Use 120-grit sandpaper.

Pay attention! Do not sand too much, because laminate is not that thick.

Step 2

Then wipe the furniture with a damp cloth.

Step 3

Then apply the oil-based primer and let it dry for at least 4 hours.

Step 4

As soon as the primer has dried you can use sandpaper again. This time, use 220 grit sandpaper, and afterwards, cover the furniture again with a damp cloth.

Step 5

Then it’s time to really get to work. Take the acrylic latex and apply the layer with a brush or roller. The latter depends on the type and size of the piece of furniture. Try to paint as much as possible in one direction.

Step 6

Let the paint dry for about 2 hours and then apply the second coat of paint. You may need a total of three or even four coats of paint. For the amount of layers, repeat the previous steps continuously.

Step 7

As soon as the paint is completely covered, it is best to leave the piece of furniture alone for one week. Do not put any accessories on the furniture, and curious hands should also be kept away. This way you can ensure the best result.
