Grow lighting for indoor plants: how to choose?

Grow lighting for plants, you may already be familiar with it, but using the lighting itself is probably a different story. Perhaps you think it is very expensive, or very complicated. Nothing could be further from the truth! With just a little knowledge of plants you can already use grow lights.

Why use grow lighting?

The main reason to use grow lighting is simply because there is not enough sunlight. Especially when autumn approaches, the use of grow lighting is a real addition.

You can use grow lighting for two reasons. For prevention and as a solution for plants that get too little light.

The right amount of light is crucial in plant care. Without enough light, a plant cannot photosynthesize. During photosynthesis, the plant absorbs light and converts it into food for the plant. If a plant does not get enough food, the leaf stems become thinner. Any flowers and fruits will also remain small.

Different types of lighting

There are different types of lighting. Think of colour, combinations and different intensities of light.

If we are to believe science, a plant needs two colors of artificial light: red and blue. A red and blue LED or UV LED is the best choice when it comes to grow lighting for plants.

Another big advantage of LED lighting is that it does not get too hot. When LED grow lighting is on, the temperature will be between 25 and 27 degrees. This is doable for most plants. If the temperature is too high, the plant can burn. And that is of course something you want to avoid!

Tips for using grow lights

When using grow lighting, it is important to stick to a light schedule. Providing plants with the growing light continuously is very unwise. If the light is off, it is therefore important that you do not turn on the light manually. Not even for a few minutes!

A grow light can cause the humidity to fall too late for the plant. Certainly something to take into account! Spray the plant regularly with a plant sprayer.
