DIY: make your own curtains

by Danique
in Home interior design

Supplies

  • Fabric
  • Curtain tape with hooks
  • Tape measure
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Electric iron
  • Ironing board
  • Washer and dryer
  • Pencil

Step 1

First of all, measure the windows.

Depending on the number of folds you would like, you have to double the width 1.5 to 3 times. The more fabric, the more pleats.

At the top and bottom we recommend an extra 4 centimeters per hem.

Step 2

It is best to order or buy fabric in a fabric shop based on dimensions and margins. Especially when you are making curtains for the first time.

Step 3

Wash the fabric beforehand according to the washing instructions. After washing and drying you can be sure that the fabric will not shrink. Fabric made of cotton, or partly cotton, can shrink in the wash.

Step 4

Then iron the fabric so that it is wrinkle-free.

Step 5

First, mark the hems with pencil. Before you immediately start stitching the hems, it is wise to go over the hem one more time with the iron.

Step 6

Now it’s time to stitch the curtain tape on top. There are hooks on this tape that will carry the curtain.

Step 7

Before hanging the curtains, it is best to iron the curtain once more. Then you can be sure that the curtains are hanging neatly.
