A Newly Designed Home Office / Family Room

February 12, 2013

It’s REVEAL day!

If you saw yesterday’s post, you read all about the evolution (and the juice backstory details) about how this space has been in transition for the last 3 years.   Since that’s outta the way, we can get right to the good stuff…  The fun and exciting ‘after’ pictures.

Some of the elements in the space are new (not much, but a few), but many have been repurposed or are DIY creations, which I will be sharing over the upcoming weeks.

But let’s get right to it.  My newly designed home office / family room…

And just so you remember, this is the before…

Home Office / Family Room Evolution

I just love this space!  With it’s evolution, the space has become one that truly reflects my classic eclectic, ‘shop your home’ style.  Plus it’s a great representation of my love for color.  Mixing in the old with the new, the repurposed with the upcycled, this space is fresh, stylish, and modern (with a hint of trendy… and I’m good with that).

The walls were painted Van Deusen Blue by Benjamin Moore last Summer.  I looked at alot of deep blue hues and this was a favorite because it was a true blue without having much red or yellow undertones.  It wasn’t electric blue and it wasn’t too dark either, but instead a bold, striking blue.  Anyway, I love it and the white bookcases, mouldings, and accents are a beautiful, stark compliment.

I feel blue is a fairly universal color (as is yellow).  It can be paired with almost any color and is a great compliment.  In my home, the other predominant color is deep (burnt) orange.  The strong orange hue can be seen on accent walls in my powder room and living room, as well as in pillows and accessories throughout, including this space.  Even with the open concept floor plan, the orange and blue hues marry so well together.  And the pops of yellow finish the look!

This next picture coming up is a view into my home office / family room from the kitchen.

At the end, is the wall of windows (almost), which lets in a HUGE amount of light.  To the right is the foyer / staircase, and to the left is the sofa and the painted laminate bookcases. The bookcases used to be separate flanking the desk, but now they are together side by side.  It was a little tricky positioning them side-by-side, but that wasn’t too difficult to fix.  And actually, if you read yesterday’s post (or the previous post on this space), you’ll remember that the right bookcase is actually covering a window.  YES, I said COVERING A WINDOW.  Crazy, I know.  But it makes the room work so much better!  O, what you do for design…

This is such a great space to work in now.  It’s not only bright and inspirational, but it’s surrounded by meaningful things including family photos, keepsakes from our travels, and artwork we love.

Many of the elements in the room were here before including the sofa, the coffee table, the bookcases, the artwork, and even the garden stool.  With the addition of new pillows and a few new accessories, along with moving things around (a.k.a ‘shopping your home’), the space took on an entire new aesthetic.

Having the bookcases side-by-side gives the illusion of a library-like space.  It’s far from a typical “library”, but the way the bookcases are styled with a combination of books and accessories, the overall composition brings character, color, and intrigue to my new home office / family room.

The LIGHT…  The natural light and the actual light fixture are Ah-Mazing! I adore both.  This room has a huge amount of natural light and with my desk positioned in front of the window, I feel like I work outside most of the day.  It’s surely inspiring.

The actual light fixture is also a favorite and that I purchased from Shades of Light.

Going way back, the desk was originally designed for my Mom Cave in the basement.  I had created the space and planned to do all my work down there, but it was too dark and drear – I never used it.  The shelves are still in place with all my crafting supplies, but the desk has been in front of this window for about a year – so much BETTER!

The desk itself was created using (2) 3′ wide X 12″ deep laminate bookcases.  For the work surface, I purchased a 3/4″ piece of plywood, covered it with fabric (stapled underneath), then had a 70″ long x 30″ wide piece of 1/4″ glass cut to size, which sits on top.  The shelves of the bookcases underneath allow for plenty of storage, yet I don’t actually see the “stuff” because they face each other and are hidden (definitely a plus since it hides my clutter).

O, and the drapes – total DIY.  Can’t wait to show you.  Don’t they look professional?  Nope…

O, and this is my blogging companion, Jessie.  Most days this is where you can find her… (did you see her in the above picture?  She loves to be in front of the lens)

And the pinnacle spot of my new home office…  My HUGE, Giant, Humungous, Amazing Inspiration Board.  I’ve been wanting, needing, obsessing over having to have one FOR-EVAH!  You’ll have to come back soon for the details, but in the meantime, let me just say it’s great. Yes, I have pinterest, but I also have tangible inspirational images that I want to see, and this is an answer to my prayers.  It’s mega… ;)

This seating vignette is really the only new thing in the room that I actually bought as-is (I splurged, what can I say?).

As you may have seen in yesterday’s post, the large green club chair and ottoman went to the basement and these were brought in for more seating.  They are white – I know, crazy with kids – but they’re so comfortable.  The fabric is a subtle microsuede, so they are super soft.  Above is the travel inspired subway art that I created last year, topped off with my gorgeous new bright yellow garden stool.

  19. I’m so glad I stumbled onto your blog. You have amazing styling sense. I love it. You are a gal after my own heart, but you have a lot more ideas that I would ever have. I wonder now that you’ve dealt with the chalk paint, could you have painted the laminate bookcases with chalk paint? I am redoing a room right now. Any tips for corners? I brought a dark blue, close to the color of your front room. accent wall into a light blue room. The corners look awful, especially on one side. I was thinking of glue gunning something in the “gutter”. Any ideas?
Again, bravo! This room is amazing

    • Hi Wendy!
So happy you found SAS Interiors. Yes, chalk paint would have been an option with the bookshelves, but I wanted to try a different method. The chalk paint + wax could have also cost alot of money to redo the (2) bookcases. I’m not sure what you mean about the corners. The corner of the bookcase is damaged? If that’s what you’re referring to, then try to use wood putty to form it back.

  20. Gorgeous! Love your desk chair and that amazing inspiration board. All the details are perfect! Stopping by from Tatertots & Jello.

  21. This is awesome! I cant wait for the tutorials. Blue walls are perfect!!

  22. I am blown away! I love every single detail about this room… I don’t have any bold colors going on in my house {I am a little afraid of color} but seeing that blue wall really makes me smile… I am seeing how it really does work with others colors.

    Great Job! Can’t wait to follow along for the details on your details ;) {the inspiration board is amazing!}

    • Thank you Carmella. I love color, so this new space is totally me. Many people are fearful of color because they’re unsure of how to put it together, but choosing 2-3 colors and applying them here and there throughout the space is how a well-balanced, colorful space works best. Thank you for you kind thoughts!

  25. Love it, I hope you kept that gorgeous rug in the before photo? It’s lovely, may I ask where you got it??

    • Thanks Kate. The rug in the ‘before’ is from Target. It’s still available if you check online or in your local store.

  26. I love the new look! I was wondering is the rug a cow hide or faux fur of some sort? I’d love to get something like that for my new living room.

  27. Hey Jenna! I was browsing around your home tour and I really like the way you arranged your living room/office. Our living room is a similar long, narrow shape, and I’m considering putting a desk in there. Yours looks great in front of the window, and what a comfortable way to work! The Van Deusen Blue looks perfect in here, and I agree that blue is such a versatile color that can be paired with just about anything. I’d love to feature this paint color on Involving Color. Let me know if you’re interested!

  28. Oh Jenna the space is now stunning! Love the yellow accents. Pinning away!

  29. I bought a small sample jar of this paint color and put it in my wall, I swear it doesn’t even look nearly as blue as It does here in this picture, it looks grayish purple with a small touch of blue, I’m so confused, did you notice that before you painted the whole room??
