Home Goals for 2012 (and My Latest Mantel)

January 16, 2012

I know, I know…  It’s the start of week number 3 of the New Year and I’m just NOW getting around to putting together my home goals for 2012.  I’ve had ideas brewing in my head for quite some time (which is typical for me, as you may know), but I’m finally putting my pen to paper (or should I say my fingers to the keyboard) to share them with YOU :)

Upon thinking about my goals for twenty-twelve, I really want to focus on simply enjoying our home, since we’ll be entering into our second year of living here next month.  My hope is to slow down and enjoy what we created (my husband and close friends are probably not believing a word of this, but at least I can try). Of course though, with anything in life, a home needs TLC and some of the things we didn’t get to in the first two years, will be our focus for the year to come.

Numero Uno on the list? The Master Bathroom.  It is the ONLY room in our entire house that hasn’t been touched. When we moved in, I put a shower curtain up and a few pictures, and that was it.  The color is a lilac, plum combo and is beautiful for a hydrangea but not for my bathroom walls!  I’ve got a vision, so we’ll see how I can transform it.  Here’s a before shot:

EEK!  I can’t believe I just posted a picture of this bathroom!

Second goal on the list? Change these darn fans in our house.  I’ve been wanting to do this from day one, but after almost two years, they are on the top of my to-do list!  The mister is the electrical go-to-person in our house (even though I’m an expert at changing the guts of lamps- wink, wink), but we had a mess of a time in our previous home with installing a ceiling fan.  Let’s just say 3 hours later, it was up and working, but I never knew if one day it was going to come crashing down or a blade would go flying off.  Thankfully it never happened, but it’s been keeping us from updating them in our new home.  FYI – one is in the master bedroom and the other is in our family room (with the burnt orange wall).

My 3rd goal for 2012 is more of a want than need, and it’s nothing that I would be doing myself.  On the list is to possible change the carpet on the stairs and second floor.  On our first floor, we have all hardware (and tile in the foyer), but the second floor is wall-to-wall carpeting.  We had it completely steam cleaned when we moved in, but it still never got out all the spots.  It’s definitely worn and would be great to update, but we shall see.  I’m also thinking wood stairs, with carpet only in the bedrooms…hmmm – that would be a BIG project!

OK, this is a ‘we’ll see’ home goal.  All the mouldings in our home need to either be restained or painted (for maintenance purposes), and since we need to go through the effort of staining (which I don’t prefer), we might as well just paint them (which I do prefer).  This would be a HUGE TASK, but come Spring or Summer, I might be up for a challenge just like I was last year with the kitchen…  you never know what the year will bring.

This goal I KNOW I CAN FULFILL for 2012 (because I’m almost done with it), ha – and it’s a revamp for my son’s skateboard room (FYI – the skateboard shelves are remaining)!  I was actually working on it over the weekend and with a few more things to finish up, it should be done soon.  This is not a huge overhaul at all, but just a few changes that I wanted to make, which was sparked from my recent rearranging of furniture – I’ll spare you the details!

My master bedroom totally got put to the wayside.  With the daily piles of laundry and an unmade bed, my master bedroom makeover has fizzled out, BUT I promise to finish it and share it soon! (Now I feel accountable to get it done)

And of course, I have a few other things to do, like…

Finish up my office / living room rearranging

and tons of outdoor projects to come for Spring and Summer.

SORRY NO PICTURE – It was way to cold outside and there’s nothing to show since everything is snow covered…you’ll have to wait and see.

BUT, I can share with you, that I have gotten my house back in order after Christmas, I touched up all the dings and dents on the walls, and I created a new mantel.  Here it is –

So that’s it for me!  I am positive, that there will be more projects and DIY creations on my plate, but I am TRULY going to try to just enjoy this year.  Blogging and running a business take A LOT OF TIME, but my family and friends are so important to me, and they are my #1 focus and GOAL!  Here’s to a great 2012!
