Fireplace Series 1: History of Fireplaces and Mantels

February 28, 2011

Ancient fireplace

Now that the Holidays are over and the Valentine's decor is packed away, it is time for my fireplace to get a revamp for Spring.  Because fireplaces can be such a challenge for homeowners to design and style, I am dedicating this ENTIRE week to the topic of Fireplaces.  Now is your chance to chime in and/or ask questions about your fireplace dilemmas. Before we can begin discussing modern day fireplaces, let's take a step back to find out how they originated. I think it's helpful to understand the origin of certain aspects of design to give you the "know-how" on ways to create a cohesive and … [Read more...]

Skateboard Shelves

February 17, 2011

I've been meaning to install shelves in my son's room for awhile, but wanted to do something unique and different.  At four years old, he has SO many interests, but one of his favorites is skateboarding.  So when recently putting the finishing touches on his "space", I thought making shelves out of skateboards would be the perfect addition! Real skateboard decks can start out around $40+ and there was no way I was purchasing shelves for that amount (I admit, I am frugal)! THANKFULLY, I stumbled upon these mini skateboards at Five Below and just like the name of the store, they were $5.  … [Read more...]

Garden Stools for your Decor

February 16, 2011

The next few days are going to be a sweet treat with the tease of some warmer weather making a visit...yes, 40 degrees is considered warm this time of year in the ADKs.  Thoughts of playing outside and endless days of soaking up the sun, are brewing in my head.   Lately, I've been giving a lot of thought to new landscaping ideas and gathering gardening tips that I plan on implementing once the snow has long melted away (hopefully soon). With gardening on the brain, I started thinking about the ever so popular, gardening stools or sometimes known as drum tables.  Once considered for use only in … [Read more...]

Our Weekend Getaway: Stockbridge

February 15, 2011

This past weekend, my hubby and I, got into our parental "escape pod" (aka, our car) and wisked away to enjoy a tranquil, quiet weekend in the lovely town of Stockbridge, Massachussets.  We were literally gone for less than 24 hours, but it felt like a glorious week long vacation.  The goal of this getaway was to do nothing and it was absolutely accomplished! Before we set sail on our quest to quietness and relaxation, we stopped for a visit at the Normal Rockwell Museum.  We've visited on a previous occasion, but couldn't make the trip without returning.  Over the years, we've been grateful … [Read more...]
