New Year, New Home: Updating your Interiors with New Bedding

January 11, 2011

The Holidays are over.  You’ve spent months preparing, decorating, and buying gifts for others.  Yes, it’s a wonderful time of year, BUT now it’s time to focus on YOU! With the New Year in full swing, I’ve been thinking about {simple, affordable, and stylish}ways to update your interior.  There is nothing better than NEW BEDDING to start off the New Year!  The average person spends 6-8 hours (or more if they’re lucky) out of 24 hours, sleeping….so why not spend that time surrounded by new linens that are comfy, soft, and luxurious.

Just this week, on one of my many trips to TJ Maxx, I picked up a new quilt.  I was in need of new bedding (not really, but I convinced myself that I was) and wanted to freshen up my bedroom. I found this beautiful, paisley green reversible {GEM} that I couldn’t resist.  I questioned the purchase and asked myself, ‘Is this worth it?  Do I really need new bedding?’  (It was only $20, but I still asked myself).  But you know what, IT IS WORTH IT.  Bedrooms are typically the last space to get attention in the home, yet we spend SOOO much time there.  WHY? For very little $$$, you can spruce up your bedroom and feel like you have a HOTEL AT HOME.

Buy the Basics

The staple pieces are important ~ Buy a good quality down comforter.  The duvet cover can be switched out season to season, but you’ll always have your (good ole’) down comforter.  Try The Company Store for a full range of different style down comforters, along with pillows, mattress pads, protectors, covers, etc…

Buy Neutral Shams & Pillows

A few years ago (actually 7+ years ago), I purchased bedding from Pottery Barn.  The duvet, shams, pillows, etc. were a cream color (neutral).  To this day (as seen in the pictures above), I still use those same shams and pillows with my many duvets & quilts…they coordinate with everything.  I like to “change things up” ALOT…I get bored easily.  Changing my bedding, makes the space feel INSTANTLY NEW.  But, I’m not spending a huge amount of $$$ because I have the neutral basics.  My Point (if you’re on a budget): When purchasing your basic, staple pieces ~ BUY neutral.  Then LAYER with color!

Before

This is kind of a bad picture, but I’m showing this because this is how my bedroom looked before with a totally different duvet, BUT I STILL USE THE SAME SHAMS & PILLOWS.  I’m not saying to NEVER buy new pillows (that’s ridiculous), but they are costly and to keep the money in your pocket, its better to invest in something good up front than to buy over and over again.
Pottery Barn still offers a similar version of the same shams and pillows.

New Bedding Makes the Room

Let’s sum this up ~ Your bed is most likely the biggest piece of furniture in your bedroom, so the bedding makes the biggest statement, right?  Freshen it up with something fun, different, and unique.  There are so many bedding materials with interesting and eye-catching patterns and textures.  Have fun with it!

Buy a new pair of sheets – Fashion for your Bed

The higher the thread count = the better quality and the longer they’ll last.  For the many hours that you sleep in your bed, have sheets surround your body that are soft and cozy.  Try these from The Company Store and Garnet Hill.

My Favorite Finds for BEDDING!

{Treat Yourself}

One of my favorite {Hot Spots} for luxurious, yet affordable bedding is Serena & Lily.  Their materials are soft and subtle, and you can find coordinating pieces (pillows, shams, blankets, quilts, etc.) to achieve a custom look.
Enjoy the cool colors of blue with this bedding by Calvin Klein available at Macy’s.   The stone gray and powder blue hues will complement any decor.  300 thread count Cotton Sateen = Pure LUXURY!

For less than $100, update your bedroom with this luxury sateen flannel in a fun, modern pattern.  Enjoy the luxuries of hotel living at home with bedding like this ~ Check it out at The Company Store.

The ‘Hotel Collection’, available at many companies like Macy’s, Pottery Barn, and even Amazon, is CLASSIC LUXURY!

And of course, for TRUE – 5 STAR {Take Your Breathe Away} BEDDING, you can INVEST in Fine Linens by Frette.  Bedding starts at $500 (or so), but continues to $2K+.  You are definitely worth it!!

Okay, Okay….a bit much??
